Major New Statements on Nuclear Security and Transparency Issued by Asia-Pacific Leaders

Members of the Asia Pacific Leadership Network (APLN) issued major statements on nuclear security and transparency, calling on governments in the region, and worldwide, to strengthen their commitment to nuclear security and take steps to build global confidence and trust.

In the nuclear security statement, the APLN outlined specific steps that should be taken in advance of the 2014 summit in the Netherlands to build on the valuable engagement of world leaders during the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul. Among the steps: universalize existing treaties without delay; establish binding nuclear security standards; establish mechanisms for transparency, reporting and accountability; strengthen the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In the transparency statement, the APLN recommended that nuclear weapons states undertake national audits of their historical production of fissile material and seriously review whether their postures on transparency adequately address both their interests and their responsibilities.
