Documentary Tackles Nuclear Dangers, Features Shultz, Perry, Kissinger, and Nunn

Nuclear Tipping Point is a new documentary film that focuses on conversations with four men intimately involved in American diplomacy and national security over the last four decades. Former Secretary of State George Shultz, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of Defense Bill Perry and former Senator Sam Nunn share the personal experiences that led them to write two Wall Street Journal op-eds in support of a world free of nuclear weapons and the steps needed to get there.

Nuclear Tipping Point
 

The Nuclear Security Project is an effort to galvanize global support for and action on the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons and the urgent steps needed to reach that goal. Former Secretary of State George P. Shultz, former Defense Secretary William J. Perry, former Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger and former Senator Sam Nunn joined together to form the Project in the wake of a Wall Street Journal op-ed in 2007 which has reframed the terms of the global debate on nuclear issues.

Meeting with President Barack Obama

Kissinger and former Senator Sam Nunn met with President Barack Obama in the White House on May 19th, 2009, to discuss their common vision of a world free of nuclear weapons and the steps needed to get there. Pledging to continue to work together, President Obama called the statesmen "four of the most preeminent national security thinkers" in our nation today and said that their vision has "helped inspire policies of this Administration" on nuclear weapons issues.

Overcoming Nuclear Dangers

On April 16-17 in Rome, Italy, more than 75 leaders from around the globe gathered together to engage in a substantive dialogue on the steps that will need to be taken to reduce nuclear dangers and to move to a world free of nuclear weapons. The two-day conference is one of the key global events springing from the op-eds written by George Shultz, Sam Nunn, Henry Kissinger and Bill Perry endorsing the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons and the steps that can move us in that direction. The conference was co-sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nuclear Security Project and the World Political Forum. The conference leaders — Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz and former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev — released a statement at the conclusion of the conference. View Statement

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences presented its Rumford Prize to Nuclear Security Project principals George P. Shultz, William J. Perry and Sam Nunn and world-renowned physicist Sidney D. Drell in recognition of their ongoing efforts to reduce the global threat of nuclear weapons.
Henry A. Kissinger will receive the Rumford Prize for his contributions at a later date.
